Love & War, the magnificent timber Sparkman & Stephens 47 skippered by Lindsay May, has been declared the official winner of theTattersalls Cup, the trophy awarded to the winner of the race on IRC handicap. The Race Committee has calculated that none of the remaining yachts at sea have a reasonable prospect of finishing in time to beat her. (more…)

SAILING LEGEND SIR ROBIN KNOX-JOHNSTON FINISHES THIRD IN FREMANTLE

At 20:57 local time (11:57 UTC), Sir Robin Knox-Johnston crossed the finish line in Fremantle (Western Australia) in leg one of the VELUX 5 OCEANS. After 67 days, 00 hours and 57 minutes alone at sea, SAGA INSURANCE sailed past the race committee boat in the waters off the Fremantle Sailing Club. (more…)

The Australian maxi Wild Oats XI has taken back-to-back line honours wins in the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, the first time this has happened since 1964 and only the sixth time in the event’s 62 year history. (more…)

The Rolex Sydney Hobart front runners have crossed Bass Strait and are sailing almost in a straight line 52 nautical miles east of St Helens off the far north east coast of Tasmania. Based on current speed, it will be a line honours finish in Hobart under the cover of darkness early tomorrow morning, Friday 29 December. (more…)

With a count of 8 yachts out of the race, masts lost, boats sunk to the bottom, and air lifts of injured persons and many boats suffering gear damage, the race is still to be won. The current leaders on the board are Wild Oats x1 for line honours with Ichi ban for handicap leader. Skandia lying in 2nd place limping with damage but still doing 8.1 kts and race leader Wild oats travelling at 11.9 kts, but there is still along way to go.

Overnight the gruelling Rolex Sydney Hobart claimed the scalp of race leader and round the world Volvo 70 ABN AMRO ONE skippered by New Zealand yachtsman Mike Sanderson and a short time later Charles St Clair Brown and Bill Buckley’s 30m maxi Maximus was also dismasted. (more…)
