Nine Miami medals for Great Britain (Is this Good?)

British sailors came away with five medals from the final day’s races at the Rolex Miami Olympic Classes Regatta on Saturday (27 January), bringing their regatta total to nine across the 14 Olympic and Paralympic classes. (more…)

Skandia Geelong Week came to a close today with a number of classes finishing their final races today as sailors families and visitors to Geelong over the Australia Day weekend enjoyed the onshore entertainment such as James Blundell, buskers, comedians, clowns and more, not to mention the big screen action from the Week’s racing put together by Wes Greene and his team and commentated by single handed around the world sailor Nick Moloney. Wild Oats XI and Shogun stars of Day 2 at Skandia Geelong Week

Bob Oatley’s Wild Oats XI with Mark Richards at the helm has again trounced her opposition on line and taking handicap honours in Race 3 on Day 2 of the Audi Series at Skandia Geelong Week sailed off Williamstown today.

However, the super maxi and crew didn’t get it all their own way, suffering what appeared to be spinnaker halyard problems in Race 4, necessitating sending a crew member up the rig and although sorted out like well oiled machinery, finished sixth overall.  However, Bob Oatley’s yacht still maintains an overall series lead of four points from Robert Hanna’s Shogun. GBR still in the chase for Miami medals

Light winds once again prevailed at the start of Wednesday’s third day of racing at the Rolex Miami Olympic Classes Regatta (22-27 January), but Skandia Team GBR’s sailors managed to hold on to nine top three slots across the 14 classes in spite of the tricky conditions. (more…)

Tuesday’s second day of the Rolex Miami Olympic Classes Regatta saw a marked change of conditions, and mixed fortunes for the British sailors in the hunt for medals.

The steady 12-15 knot breezes which greeted competitors on Monday’s first day of racing were replaced with shifty and light conditions on Tuesday (23 January), with winds hovering around the 6 knot mark following a postponement to the start of racing until the early afternoon. (more…)

Rolex Miami Olympic Classes Regatta (GBR off 2 a good start)

British sailors got off to a strong start amidst perfect conditions on day one of the Rolex Miami Olympic Classes Regatta at Biscayne Bay on Monday (22 January).

A steady south-easterly 12-15 knot breeze greeted competitors for the start of this Grade 1 regatta, which sees a record 855 sailors from 49 nations entered.

Skandia Team GBR’s sailors took an early lead in four of the 14 classes, with defending champion Paul Goodison and Athens silver medallists Nick Rogers and Joe Glanfield topping their respective leaderboards in the Laser and 470 men’s events. (more…)

Acura Key West 2007 –“Stuck on Gorgeous”

– Ideal Weather and World Class Competition Make 20th Race Week Special  

   ESPN commentator Gary Jobson stated it accurately and perfectly in one of his daily reports on Acura Key West 2007, presented by Nautica.

  Jobson described the weather in Key West this week as “stuck on gorgeous.”

  Gorgeous indeed and how fitting the 20th anniversary of the renowned international regatta would deliver the type of conditions for which the southernmost point of the United States is famous.

   A fleet of 260 boats carrying more than 2,000 sailors enjoyed sunny skies and temperatures in the 80s all five days of the regatta, organized by Premiere Racing. Adding to the spectacular scene were top-notch sailing conditions – steady 10-14 knot winds and flat water off the Conch Republic. (more…)
