The shape of things to come in Clyde Racing (Scotland)

The shape of things to come in Clyde Racing.

bowdown.jpg

Could this be the shape of things to come? while most are just thinking about getting their boats sorted out for the season there has been one programme in full motion for some time. It’s odd just how much work it can take to put a new boat together but that’s just what’s been happening with this campaign. In a class where where you don’t get much change back out of £250k for a season’s campaign and would see most of us living in a tent at the end of it, this must be the thick end of sailing costs before it even hits the water.

It looks the business and even when you’re close smells fast too, more baby wipes than sand paper to smooth out this bottom anymore. There’s no doubt its going to be fast but just how fast? Well damn fast I would say, ‘there’s nothing camp about this’ said the cleaning lady in the shed.

Rumour has it that it’s going to be a sail training ship to introduce people straight into the sharp end of yacht racing? could be a steep mountain to climb but what an opportunity to experience big boat yacht racing, but and there is always a but, you will need a core team of “good guys”  to hit the fast forward buttons and know where they are. All together a great project in the making.

The cleaning lady tells me that they have a top man in the marine industry project managing the boat till it hits the liqiud, and she tells me a crack core sailing team of dudes that have been round the block, some more than others she said but swore me to secrecy as the £2.40 per hour cash in hand no questions asked third job was Farr to good to lose.

Will keep you posted on this one.

2007 Acura Miami Grand Prix – Overall

March 12, 2007

Samba Pa Ti was another double-winner, capturing IRC class here in Miami and also garnering the Acura Grand Prix Championship for that class. Skipper John Kilroy seized the lead on the second day of this regatta and never relinquished it despite heavy pressure from Magic Glove, a Ker 50 owned by Colm Barrington of Dublin, Ireland.

“It’s always nice to win a major regatta, but you also want to leave the race course feeling that you had a good time. We really enjoyed ourselves because the conditions and the competition were outstanding,” Kilroy said.

Magic Glove beat Samba by a point in Key West, but the California-based TP52 turned the tables in Miami by winning three races and placing second or third in five others.

“It was wonderful competing against Magic Glove. I cannot say enough about that team. Colm is a fantastic gentleman for whom I have great respect,” said Kilroy, who holds an Irish passport.

Samba Pa Ti was loaded with Volvo Ocean Race veterans such as tactician Stu Bannatyne, trimmer Richard Clarke and grinder Mike Howard. Kilroy and crew had better boat speed than in Key West and were the class of the four TP52s in Miami.

“We made some changes to the boat since Key West, lots of little things that seemed to make a difference. We really made a nice improvement since Key West,” said Bannatyne, who had high praise for Kilroy’s steering ability. “John is a very good helmsman. He has a great feel for the boat and a lot of input into the way it is set up.” (more…)

The Ker 50, owned by Colm Barrington of Dublin, Ireland splits the two much bigger TP52. Having already shown how to get a result at Key West earlier this year when it went down to the wire, they kept there beers on cool and won the day  and IRC class to (Carbon Machine Class) so with one day to I’m sure they will have their Phasers on stun on the last day of racing
